Dear Students and Parents,

I am so excited that we will be working together this school year.  We are already off to such a positive start!!  Thanks for your patience as I begin to update our blog page for this school year.  You will find it helpful to check here often.  My goal is to keep it current and provide resources that you can access easily, both at home and at school.  If there are ever any links that do not work, or questions about the blog page, please feel free to leave comments.  Of course, if you love it and just want to encourage me to 'keep at it'... your comments are welcome and appreciated.  Thank you for coming to our class blog page.  Hope you will return often.

This site is designed to keep you informed about what is going on in our classroom.  You can check it for homework updates, information on projects, sites that will extend your learning experiences with our Fourth Grade Curriculum, information about special events, etc.  Check it often, because it will contain information about what is going on at our school, in our classroom, and in our community.  Please monitor your child's homework folder, school agenda notebook, and Tuesday red folder for communications.  Let's have a wonderful school year!

Summer is Here!

Summer_fun Believe it or Not... Summer Vacation is Here!

We have had a fantastic Fourth Grade Year!  Thank you to students and parents for your commitment to excellence this year.  I must admit, fourth grade is a challenging time and you rose to the challenges in so many ways.  Enjoy the time off!

Well... YOU MUST READ DURING THE SUMMER!  A reading list and some suggested activities should be included with your report card.  I strongly encourage families to require students to REVIEW AND PRACTICE CRITICAL MATH SKILLS like division of larger numbers and multiplication of larger numbers.  Try different strategies (cluster problems, lattice multiplication model, grid model for multiplication, etc) and use the sites on this blog page for learning games to stay "Skill-sharp" during the summer.  There will be little, if any, time for review in August.  With so much to cover in the curriculum, fourth and fifth grade classes will be jumping right into another year of learning when school begins.  WRITE, WRITE, WRITE!  Use the summer to sharpen your writing skills (not just handwriting, but if you need to work on penmanship--practice!).  Students will need to have a working knowledge of summarization, informational writing, persuasive writing, poetry, narrative writing, and writing research/reports.  Edit your work for grammatical and spelling accuracy, writer's voice, content, sentence fluency, and appropriate word choices.

Parents:  you may take a "sneak peek" at the curriculum for next year by accessing PICASSO.  Click on the appropriate grade level and find out what your child will be academically responsible for during the 2007-2008 school year.  It's a great idea to provide learning experiences that allow your child to have some prior knowledge when it is introduced/discussed in class (i.e. if you can visit Cyclorama during the summer, your child will have a reference point when discussing the Civil War in class).

If you have any questions or comments, you can reach me via email at carol.love@cobbk12.org during the summer.

All of the information on this blog page is new.  Please refer to this page and check for updates....

Blogging is a NEW experience for me.  Please be patient as I learn how to utilize this exciting resource to keep our learning community -- parents, students, and "web visitors"-- informed about what is going on in our classroom.  Check "The Love Letters" often for updates.  My goal is to use this blog to post general information about upcoming events, and in the future, details about homework and websites students can access from a computer to support our studies at school.  I am looking forward to using our Class Blog to maximize our learning experiences.

Let's Get "Test Ready"!!!Animated_computer_student_3

Students throughout Georgia are preparing for the Georgia CRCT (Criterion Referenced Compentency Tests).. and Nickajack students have access to great online resources to get "test ready".  Each child has access to two sites designed specifically for Georgia students.  Please take advantage of these resources. Testing is scheduled for April 16 - April 25 (including make-up dates).  Fourth grade will be administering the full battery of tests:  READING, LANGUAGE ARTS/GRAMMAR, MATH, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES.

  • Georgia Online Assessment Students have a 10-digit login number and state-issued password to access this system.  If you do not have your child's login information, please contact me.
  • Study Island Students use their CCSD student ID number.nes as the login and password (12345) to access this system.  Ex. Jane Doe student number 999456.nes; password 12345.

If your child does not have Internet/computer access at home, please investigate alternatives such as any of the public libraries in our community, friends/family, and arriving at school early to use classroom/school computers for practice.

Of course there are many resources available to prepare for standardized testing, such as workbooks available at local teacher supply stores as well as practice students are completing in class.  The most important thing to do is PREPARE!!!!  Read these great Tips to Give Your Child About Taking Tests.

Test Taking Tips
1. Get plenty of sleep the night before the test.

2. Eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the test.

3. Wear comfortable clothes.

4. Pay close attention to test directions.

5. Read every answer choice before marking your answer.

6. Answer the easy questions first.

7. If you're not sure of the answer, rule out the choices that you know are wrong. Select the best answer of the choices left.

8. If you have time, check over your answers before you turn in your test.

9. Remember to believe in yourself and do your best.

Please browse this site. Information is posted about the Field Trip, Accelerated Reader, and CRCT.
