Career Exploration Day

At Nickajack Elementary School, we pride ourselves on exposing our students to a variety of Help wanted educational experiences.  Tuesday, May 12, 2009 is Career Exploration Day.  On that day, we invite people from the community and different walks of like to come in and talk to our students about their careers and the importance of a good education.  We would be honored if you would give us 30 minutes or more of your time that day to come in and share with our students.  If this sounds like something that you would be interested in doing, please contact Nicole Pfleger at (678) 842-5814, ext. 230 or Nicole.Pfleger@cobbk12.org.

We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at this wonderful event where we celebrate community involvement and exposing our students to the very best of what the world has to offer.

“The Parenting Paradox: Neither Friend nor Foe”

Paradox…a puzzle, a contradiction, a situation that often defies intuition. Parenting today includes the reality that too many of us want to be our children’s friend. Yet, parenting is not a popularity contest.

Join Stacey DeWitt and other Nickajack parents for a frank discussion about the challenges and issues our kids face every day. Learn what parents need to understand about our kids’ lives and how to be a safe haven – with rules and standards – in the midst of their chaos.

Random Acts of Kindness

Have YOU filled a bucket today?

Each of us has an invisible bucket.  It is constantly emptied or filled, depending on what others say or do to us.  When our bucket is full, we feel great.  Like the cup that runneth over, a full bucket gives us a positive outlook and renewed energy.  Every drop in the bucket makes us stronger and more optimistic.

Book Drive, Food Drive, RAK Week 009

Random Acts of Kindness Week was a huge success!  Check out the bulletin board by the front office to read all of the “drops” in our bucket that students and teachers left for each other.  We look forward to seeing acts of kindness each and every day in our school!

"Books for a Better World"

USED BOOK DRIVE October 27 - November 14

Nickajack wants to send books half way around the world for children at a school in Africa and you can help!

Nickajack is partnering with a school in Lome, Togo where former teacher, Shelley Galbreath, is working to build a library. Bring your used children’s books to Nickajack beginning October 27 and place them in the box for your grade level.

Let’s show the world the compassion and generosity of our Nickajack family by collecting boxes and boxes of books!

Career Exploration Day

Students spend the day thinking "When I Grow Up..."

If you walked the halls of Nickajack Elementary on Tuesday, May 13th, you saw the faces of future nurses, doctors, athletes, veterinarians, lawyers, astronauts, teachers, military personnel, business leaders and more… Many of our students came dressed as someone in the profession they wish to have when they grow up.  Primary students enjoyed a morning exploring vehicles associated with careers while intermediate grades heard from a series of speakers.  Thank you to the support of all of our fabulous volunteers, Career Day was a huge success!

Global Youth Service Day

Student Council Participates in the Great American Cleanup

Student Council members participated in the Great American Cleanup as their project for Global Youth Service Day.  Students spent the afternoon working to beautify the Nickajack campus by picking up litter and pulling weeds.  Student Council members worked with parent volunteer Penny Bradley to plant shrubs, including two blueberry bushes in the garden by the outdoor classroom.  A special thank you to Mrs. Bradley and the students for giving back to our school community and helping to keep Nickajack beautiful!

Building Bridges

5th Grade Students Demonstrate Cooperation

5th grade students demonstrated cooperation in guidance last week by working together to build a bridge out of marshmallows, gumdrops, and toothpicks.  As a result of the activity, students were able to:

  • Define cooperation as "working together for a common purpose"
  • Perform a cooperative activity
  • Discuss cooperation, respecting differences and communication as important for connecting with others

Stop by the display on the 5th grade hallway to check out the photographs of the finished products and read what the students had to say about how they cooperated to get the job done. March_photos_072_2 March_photos_073_2 March_photos_089_2 March_photos_090_2
